The section is made up of 11 films about different areas of climbing, including rock climbing, sport climbing, and ice climbing. This year’s films can be summed up in one word, “Challenge.” Most of the films deal with the struggles and accomplishments of the climbers who endlessly challenge themselves to journey beyond their own physical and regional limits. The heated passion of two women comes through in Break on Through, a film about the first woman to climb a route graded 5.15a, Margo Hayes, and Stumped, about a woman climber who enjoys climbing despite missing one hand. Meet climbers who never lose their cool and laughter even in extreme conditions in Ice Calling, a film about Mexican climbers attempting to climb Canada’s largest ice cliff, and Coconut Connection, about a team of Belgian and Italian climbers exploring Baffin Island in Northern Canada. Noteworthy is the original mountain film W, which brings together with a comical twist Reinhold Messner’s solo climb of Mount Everest and a modern city dweller’s search for the meaning of life and loneliness.
